Hungary will continue to grant asylum to Ukrainian men of draft age, despite new EU rules that prohibit it.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has said that many of these people are ethnic Hungarians from the Transcarpathian region, and that preventing people from leaving a country that is at war is a mistake.

The EU law, which went into effect on August 5 at Kyiv’s request, prevents new temporary protection from being granted to men who have not carried out their military duties.

Hungary voted against the law.

Magyar has had serious disagreements with former prime minister Orbán. At the NATO Ankara meeting, he called Russia a “merciless aggressor,” but on this issue, both governments took the same position.
