Argentina says it will sanction oil companies drilling in the Falkland Islands

🔸Argentina’s president says the country will sanction oil companies that drill in the Falkland Islands, thereby intensifying its claims about sovereignty over this British overseas territory.

🔸The remarks by Javier Milei were made in a national television address on Thursday, 12 Shahrivar, a few days after U.S. President Donald Trump said he is reviewing the United States’ position of neutrality regarding this far-flung archipelago in the South Atlantic.

🔸Argentina calls the Falkland Islands “Las Malvinas.”

🔸Milei said that the likelihood of oil exploration by companies in these islands is an immediate threat to Argentina’s interests.

🔸The comments come 44 years after the country lost a war over sovereignty of these islands to Britain.

🔸A U.S. ally of Trump, Milei pointed to a possible shift in the U.S. position and said “winds of change” are blowing in favor of Argentina’s claim. He said he will introduce a bill aimed at strengthening Argentina’s response to violations of its sovereignty.

🔸Britain, which has held control of the territory since 1833, announced on Friday, 13 Shahrivar, that its position on these islands is “unshakable.”

🔸David Miliband, Britain’s foreign secretary, wrote on the X social media platform: “These islands are British and will remain British, because that is the clear will of the islanders.”
