After an attack off the coasts of Oman and a fire in the engine room, the tanker Al Ghaya is being towed to one of the country’s ports.
Based on a report by Reuters, citing Omani officials, 23 crew members have been evacuated from the vessel, and two people are still missing.
Accounts regarding the cause of the incident are contradictory.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced that Al Ghaya, flying the flag of Panama, struck a sea mine while passing through the “restricted zone” in the south of the Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. Central Command described the claim as false and said the vessel “was hit by an Iranian missile last month and disabled.”
The International Maritime Organization had reported that Al Ghaya was damaged on Saturday, without specifying the cause.
