Two senior sources told Reuters that the Islamic Republic, in ongoing negotiations with the United States, is seeking recognition of its control over the Strait of Hormuz, and wants to collect tolls or fees from ships transiting the strait after the end of a temporary 60-day period. According to these sources, the Islamic Republic interprets the interim agreement as preserving control over the passage of ships, without charging any fee during the temporary period, and considers this a prerequisite for progress on other areas of the negotiations. In contrast, Donald Trump has said that no tolls will be accepted for passage through Hormuz unless the United States itself decides to do so. Trump administration officials have also emphasized that no country has the right to condition or make expensive passage through an international waterway.
