The U.S. Navy said the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower shot down a drone launched from Yemen over the Red Sea on Sunday. The aircraft was heading toward a shipping corridor used by commercial vessels, according to the Reuters report.
The interception comes as Houthi forces continue to threaten traffic in one of the world’s busiest maritime routes. Since the escalation in the region, attacks and attempted strikes have raised security risks for cargo ships and tankers passing through the Red Sea.
Maritime disruption in the area has forced shipping companies to adjust routes and increase security measures, adding costs and delays to global trade. The latest incident underscores how civilian commerce remains vulnerable to armed groups operating in Yemen.
No immediate damage or injuries were reported in connection with the drone strike. The U.S. Navy did not provide additional details on the target or whether any other vessels were affected.
