🔶 Trump imposed new customs tariffs on imports from 60 trading partners

The United States will impose new tariffs of 10% and 12.5% against 60 trading partners, including the European Union.

Jamieson Greer, a U.S. trade representative, said that the new tariffs would cover more than 94% of total imports.

The U.S. administration justifies these new tariffs by citing the non-implementation of laws prohibiting forced labor in the countries concerned.

Accordingly, imported goods from countries that have passed suitable laws to combat forced labor will be subject to the lower 10% rate. In contrast, for imports from countries that have insufficient bans regarding forced labor, the higher 12.5% rate will apply.

Jamieson Greer’s office, the U.S. trade representative, said that the new tariffs will be applied starting at 6:00 a.m. on Friday, Mordad 2 (July 24), Germany time (midnight Eastern Time on the U.S. East Coast) on imports of certain specific goods.

Goods that have been loaded earlier and are already on ships, as well as those in the final stage of transport to their destination and that will be cleared before July 28, will be exempt from these tariffs.

According to information released, a general 10% tariff will be applied to the European Union by the United States; although in some cases, the 12.5% tariff has also been mentioned.

For the United Kingdom and Canada, a 10% rate is being considered. In contrast, the United States applies a higher 12.5% rate against countries such as China or Japan.

The new tariffs cover a large portion of U.S. trade. For products such as steel and aluminum, the higher tariffs will remain in place.
