Interview with Ali Vaez; Why is Iraqchi going to Beijing despite his recent meetings with Chinese officials?
🔸 In recent days, Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Abbas Iraqchi met with Chinese officials at two summits—Shanghai and BRICS—but despite this, on Wednesday he will travel to China on an official trip. The purpose of the trip is announced to be talks with China’s foreign minister about bilateral relations, and major regional and international issues. On Monday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, in response to the possibility of China mediating in the crisis in the Persian Gulf, said that there are already sufficient mediators and emphasized that there is not going to be, in the precise and technical sense of the term, the entry of a new actor in the form of a mediator. At the same time, he also pointed to Pakistan’s good performance as a mediator. Regarding the importance of Hossein Abbas Iraqchi’s trip, Radio Farda sought Ali Vaez’s views, the Head of Iran’s section at the International Crisis Group in Geneva.
