Hossein Shariatmadari, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic’s representative in Kayhan newspaper, referring to Trump’s remarks about restoring a naval blockade against the ports of southern Iran, wrote: “Now is the time that, in addition to the Strait of Hormuz being closed—which has taken America’s breath—let us also close Bab al-Mandab so that we can witness the complete suffocation of America and its allies.”

He added: “To which international protocol have America and Europe been committed that we should be?*! Has Iran’s naval blockade been mentioned in international protocols? So that closing Bab al-Mandab would not have been?*! Be sure that even announcing that we are in pursuit of closing Bab al-Mandab is a strong slap to Trump’s face.”
