🔶 German chancellor: We are all shocked by the result of the Saxony-Anhalt election
Friedrich Merz, chancellor and leader of Germany’s Christian Democratic Union party, in his first public remarks after the electoral victory of the far-right party “Alternative for Germany” in the state election in Saxony-Anhalt, spoke of the “heaviest electoral defeat in decades” for his party.
Merz said at a press conference in Berlin: “This matter, of course, must have consequences.”
According to Merz, such a result in this form was not expected, and “all of us are deeply shocked.”
He, however, said that now the election result must be accepted, adding: “These are the rules of our democracy.”
Merz, saying that “the outcome of this election is also influential on the international situation,” said that yesterday’s election changed something: “Not only in Saxony-Anhalt, but throughout Germany.”
