American officials said U.S. forces targeted several Iranian oil tankers linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in response to an attempt to attack an American Navy warship with a missile.

A U.S. official told ABC News that the attacks were carried out in response to “further efforts to launch missile attacks” against the American warship. NBC News, citing a U.S. official, also reported that the missile strikes did not cause damage to the warship or the forces deployed on it.

CNN, citing two U.S. officials, reported that several Iranian tankers near Khark Island in the Strait of Hormuz were targeted. According to the network, the attacks took place as the United States increased its focus on targets around the Strait of Hormuz and simultaneously continued escort operations for commercial vessels and the maritime blockade of Iranian ports.

Meanwhile, the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting reported the American forces’ attack on two tankers in the waters of Jask port and said that the crews of both tankers were being transferred to the shore of Jask by lifeboat.
