Russia said on Friday that it carried out a successful test launch of its RS-28 Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile from the Plesetsk cosmodrome in the country’s north. The defence ministry described the launch as routine, even as nuclear tensions remain elevated amid broader geopolitical friction.
The Sarmat is one of Russia’s most closely watched strategic weapons programs and is designed to carry multiple warheads over long distances. Moscow has repeatedly highlighted its nuclear capabilities in messaging aimed at deterring Western pressure and signaling military readiness.
The test comes at a time when arms control efforts remain strained and major powers continue to exchange warnings over escalation risks. Such launches are often scrutinized not only for their technical claims, but also for the political message they send to rivals.
Reuters reported that the ministry did not indicate any problems during the launch. As with previous missile tests, the announcement is likely to draw attention from defense analysts and governments tracking Russia’s strategic forces and nuclear posture.
