As summer heat intensifies, Japanese men are dropping their formal workplace attire more than ever before and wearing shorts.

The Tokyo metropolitan government is encouraging company employees to set aside their usual suits and ties and wear more comfortable clothing, including T-shirts, athletic shoes, and shorts.

Yuriko Koike, the governor of Tokyo, introduced the “Tokyo Cool Biz” scheme in April; an initiative offered to expand her program to combat the heat and which has now become one of Japan’s well-known summer traditions.

Nearly four months after the start of this scheme, the new policy that allows wearing shorts at work has met with different reactions.
