In a coordinated effort, the European Union and Britain imposed new sanctions on Russia over cyber attacks in Europe, with the sixteenth center of the FSB intelligence organization at the heart of them.
Brussels sanctioned nine individuals and four entities, including intelligence officers, hackers, and private companies, and London added 24 names to its blacklist. According to a statement by the Council of Europe, this network has been spying on governments since 2010 and has carried out sabotage against critical infrastructure such as power plants for electricity and thermal facilities. At least nine countries, including France, Germany, Poland, and the Netherlands, have been targeted by these attacks.
France’s foreign minister also said that Paris will summon Russia’s ambassador in the coming days. Jean-Noël Barrot said the aim of these attacks is “to steal information or carry out sabotage in operations,” such as sabotage against railway infrastructure in Poland.
