Residents in southern Greenland are worried that if the U.S. military presence expands and old infrastructure is revived in Narsarsuaq, they will be forced to leave their homes.
Local people say that rebuilding or reopening the former U.S. base could lead to the seizure of land, the forced relocation of residents, and ignoring the interests of the local community.
One resident said: “The thought that I might have to leave my home really makes me sad.”
Narsarsuaq was the site of U.S. forces during the Cold War, and some residents fear that if a large military facility returns, the interests of local people will again not come first.
