President Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner:
“I want to personally congratulate Kaitlan Collins from CNN for receiving her award.
It was all about me. It was a fake show. She shouldn’t have gotten that award. It was fake—there’s no question about it.
But I didn’t have a problem with it. I said, ‘Kaitlan, congratulations.’ But it was a fake thing. There is no doubt about it.
She’s a young, attractive woman. She never smiles... so smile, Kaitlan. Just smile.
But we’re attacking, and I think...”
Note: Trump, in this segment, talks in a playful and sarcastic tone about an award that was given to Kaitlan Collins. By “It was all about me,” he means that he believes Collins’s reporting and media coverage were more about himself (Trump), not an independent piece of journalism; and by saying “fake,” he uses a word he usually employs to attack the media. The line “So smile, Kaitlin” is also a personal joke about her seriousness and facial expression.
