🔸One day after the decision of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency to refer Iran’s case to the United Nations Security Council, on Thursday morning, 19 Shahrivar, members of this body began discussing the reactivation of the sanctions committee related to Resolution 1737 and, despite Russia and China’s opposition, approved the start of talks on the matter with 11 votes in favor.
🔸Under this resolution, adopted 20 years ago, the sanctions committee was required to, every 90 days, review Iran’s case and report to the Security Council.
🔸The three-month reports of this committee, which had been operating under the “Non-Proliferation” agenda item, continued for 9 years—until the JCPOA was reached and, subsequently, with the adoption of Resolution 2231. That resolution put all previous sanctions resolutions, including Resolution 1737, into suspension, and as a result, the periodic reports of the sanctions committee also stopped.
🔸Last year, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom—the three European countries that are parties to the JCPOA—paved the way for the return of United Nations sanctions against Iran by activating the snapback mechanism.
