🔻 During recent election campaigns across Latin America, Vice President Nayib Bukele, the president of El Salvador, and his tough policies in dealing with crime and violence, including his vast and controversial prisons, were among the constant and contentious references in political debates.

In Colombia, Abelardo de la Espriera, the right-wing politician who won the election, openly expressed his admiration for Vice President Bukele. During his election campaign, he promised to build seven large prisons based on the El Salvador model.

In Peru, the neighboring country, Keiko Fujimori—who won the presidential election—also turned this idea into the central focus of her platform for establishing order and law.
