According to human rights organizations, a hunger strike by prisoners in protest at the continuation of the execution of death sentences—and what they call the “expansion of the execution process”—is still ongoing. Human rights sources, while expressing concern about the situation of the hunger strikers, have warned about the worsening of their physical condition and the continued indifference of prison officials, and have called for immediate attention to the condition of these prisoners.
According to this report, two weeks after the start of the hunger strike, the physical condition of many prisoners has deteriorated. Sources familiar with the matter have reported severe weakness, blood pressure drops, weight loss, lethargy, and physical inability among a number of the strikers, and have said that some of them, due to refusing to eat, have lost a large portion of their physical strength.
