🔶 Greenpeace: Oil slick in the Strait of Hormuz doubled in size within one day

An environmental non-governmental organization, Greenpeace, announced on Friday, 19 Shahrivar (10 September) that an oil slick in the Strait of Hormuz had nearly doubled in size within a day and that its source may be an oil tanker that was recently targeted by the United States.

According to Greenpeace, satellite images show that the slick’s extent in the eastern part of the Strait of Hormuz increased from about 200 square kilometers on 9 September to about 400 square kilometers on 10 September.

The organization has suggested that the Riesco tanker may be the source of the pollution, because it was last seen near the location that could be the possible starting point of the oil leak, and afterward no signal from this ship was received.

The U.S. Army had previously said that it targeted this tanker and several other tankers associated with Iran.

Greenpeace warned that if the oil reaches the shores of the region, its environmental consequences could be very serious. The organization also said that since the start of the war with Iran, multiple attacks on oil tankers have led to several cases of oil spills in the Strait of Hormuz.
