🔶 Ceuta crisis; tens of thousands protest against the Spanish government

Following the intensification of the migration crisis in Ceuta, tens of thousands of people in different cities across Spain held demonstrations against the country’s immigration policy. Spanish officials said that in Madrid alone, about 50,000 people took part in the protests.

According to media reports, Spain’s National Police late on Wednesday night, 11 Ordibehesht (September 3), dispersed extremist groups that were said to be present around the parliament using tear gas and plastic bullets.

Protesters and speakers accused Pedro Sánchez, Spain’s prime minister, of making concessions to Morocco and of failing to help Ceuta. Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the conservative People’s Party, described the entry of migrants as “aggressive,” which he said was provoked by Morocco.

It is estimated that in the past month, about 70,000 people entered Ceuta from Morocco, many of whom crossed by swimming. At least 90 people have died along the route.
