🔻Basent: U.S. warnings about bypassing Iran sanctions have been heard
The U.S. Treasury secretary said that ahead of next week’s meeting in Washington between Xi Jinping and Donald Trump, he will discuss with China’s vice premier the financial ties between Tehran and Beijing.
Scott Bessent also said that trade relations between China and Iran will be part of the discussions between the U.S. and China presidents.
Bessent also said that the dollar is an increasingly growing currency reserve and called it a sign of “the credibility of our system and what this administration is doing.” He said that although China and Russia have reduced their dollar reserves, other countries are increasing them.
The U.S. government announced its economic isolation plan for Iran on August 24 (September 2), focusing on banking and currency, technology, shipping, and aviation.
Testifying before the House of Representatives, the U.S. Treasury secretary said that countries “have heard Washington’s warnings” about bypassing U.S. sanctions.
Bessent’s remarks refer to the U.S. warnings to all countries and companies that help Iran bypass sanctions.
He said: “We sanctioned three banks. We’ve had very good private discussions with China, and I’m looking forward to continuing these discussions later this week when I meet with my Chinese counterpart, He Lifeng (vice premier).”
Bessent and He are laying the groundwork for the meeting between Mr. Trump and Mr. Xi.
Xi Jinping is expected to travel to Washington on September 24.
