European Union regulators are examining whether major technology companies are using investments and partnerships in artificial intelligence startups to limit competition, according to people familiar with the review.
The companies under scrutiny include Microsoft, Meta, Amazon and Google. Officials are said to be looking at whether these deals could give the largest platforms an unfair advantage in a market where access to compute, data and distribution already gives incumbents significant power.
The review reflects growing concern in Brussels that AI markets could become concentrated around a few dominant firms before smaller rivals have a chance to scale. Regulators are reportedly assessing whether the deals should face closer antitrust examination under EU competition rules.
The scrutiny comes as lawmakers and competition authorities across Europe step up pressure on big tech over market dominance, data control and the terms under which emerging AI firms can operate. Any formal action would add fresh regulatory risk for the sector as it races to expand AI products and infrastructure.
