The United States and the Philippines have begun their largest annual military exercise to date, deploying more than 14,000 troops in drills centered on maritime security and regional defense. The exercise comes as tensions remain elevated in the South China Sea, where overlapping territorial claims continue to fuel strategic competition.
The expanded drills underline Washington and Manila’s efforts to strengthen military coordination and readiness at sea. Officials say the exercises are designed to improve interoperability, test response capabilities, and support the Philippines’ defense posture in a contested maritime environment.
The timing of the training adds to friction in one of the world’s most sensitive waterways. China claims much of the South China Sea, while the Philippines and other regional states have pushed back against what they describe as coercive actions in disputed waters.
The scale of this year’s exercise reflects the growing importance both countries place on deterrence and alliance signaling. It also highlights how the South China Sea remains a flashpoint where military posturing, diplomacy, and sovereignty disputes continue to intersect.
