Turkey says it will continue military operations against the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, in northern Iraq and Syria, even after the group announced plans to disband. The statement came from Turkey's defence ministry on Saturday and signals that Ankara does not consider the armed campaign over.
The PKK has long been designated a terrorist organization by Turkey and several of its allies. Its decades-long conflict with the Turkish state has left deep human and political scars across the region, while civilians in border areas have often borne the cost of the fighting.
Saturday's announcement suggests Turkey will keep pressure on PKK-linked positions and networks outside its borders. The move also raises the risk of further instability in parts of Iraq and Syria already strained by conflict, displacement, and weak governance.
Reuters reported that the ministry framed the operations as continuing despite the group's disbandment announcement. For civilians living near the front lines, the immediate concern remains security, displacement, and the possibility of renewed escalation.
