US President Donald Trump, by publishing a chart of the defense budgets of several NATO member countries including the United States, said that continuing the “one-sided relationship” of the United States with NATO is “ridiculous.” In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “For the United States of America it is ridiculous to continue down this one-sided path when this relationship is not reciprocal. They were not there for us.” In the chart published in this post, it is shown that the United States has invested much more than several other member countries in this organization, including the UK and France. Under pressure from the United States, NATO member countries last year, at a summit, agreed to increase defense spending to 5% of their GDP by 2035. Trump’s latest remarks about NATO were made less than a week before the summit of the leaders of the organization in Ankara. Trump has repeatedly criticized US European allies for the way they responded to the war against the Islamic Republic, and he has also repeatedly expressed doubts about NATO financing by the United States.
