Israel has approved plans for a large new desalination plant on the Mediterranean coast near Haifa, in a move aimed at strengthening the country’s water supply during prolonged drought conditions. The facility is expected to become one of the largest of its kind in the world.
According to the Reuters report, the project is designed to produce about 200 million cubic meters of water each year. Officials say the output should help reduce strain on natural freshwater sources, including the Jordan River basin, which has faced mounting pressure from climate stress and overuse.
The decision comes as water shortages continue to challenge countries across the region. Desalination has become a central part of Israel’s long-term water strategy, helping expand supply for households, agriculture, and industry while limiting reliance on rainfall.
The new plant reflects a broader shift toward infrastructure built to adapt to a warming and increasingly water-stressed environment. Still, large-scale desalination projects also require major investment and long-term planning to manage costs, energy use, and environmental impacts.
