The U.S. president, Donald Trump, said in a speech delivered on Friday night at Mount Rushmore, on the eve of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, that “we have built the strongest and most powerful army in the world. We won in two world wars and the Cold War and sent America’s enemies into the depths of history. We defeated Venezuela in a day and smashed [the Islamic Republic] Iran. They are at the point of death demanding an agreement. They are desperately demanding an agreement. We gave them a week’s time for a funeral ceremony, because we are good people.”
