The European Commission has proposed new draft rules that would require large online platforms to explain how they use artificial intelligence in content moderation. The plan is aimed at increasing transparency around automated decisions that can remove posts, flag accounts, or restrict access to content.
Under the proposal, platforms would face stricter disclosure obligations about when AI systems are involved in takedowns and other moderation actions. The draft is part of a broader effort by EU policymakers to strengthen oversight of digital systems that shape what users see and share online.
Supporters of the measure argue that users should know when machines, rather than human reviewers, influence enforcement decisions. They say clearer rules could help improve accountability and give regulators a better view of how platforms handle speech, safety, and errors at scale.
The proposal would still need to move through the EU legislative process before becoming law. If adopted, it could add fresh compliance pressure on major tech companies already facing tighter European scrutiny over transparency, safety, and platform governance.
