One server is one point of failure
A single MongoDB server takes your app down the moment it fails, and a full disk or a restart is enough. A replica set keeps the same data on several servers and elects a new leader when one of them fails. Sharding goes further: when one machine cannot hold all the data, it splits the data itself across servers.
