President Donald Trump’s 2027 budget proposal would sharply reduce federal support for science, according to a report from Science magazine. The plan calls for a 20% cut to the National Science Foundation, one of the largest proposed reductions in decades.
The blueprint also would trim grant funding at the National Institutes of Health by nearly $4 billion, a move that could affect medical research, university labs, and early-stage scientific work across the country.
Research advocates have long warned that steep cuts to basic science can slow innovation and weaken the pipeline for future breakthroughs. The proposal is expected to face scrutiny from lawmakers, universities, and scientific organizations as budget negotiations begin.
If adopted, the reductions would mark a major shift in federal research policy and likely force agencies and institutions to scale back projects already underway.
