C and C++

Close to the machine, built for speed.

C++ runs under game engines, web browsers, databases and trading systems: anywhere every microsecond counts. It grew out of C, which Dennis Ritchie created at Bell Labs in the early 1970s, when Bjarne Stroustrup began adding classes to it in 1979. Today it is a modern language with a rich standard library.

This intro course uses C++20 and the g++ compiler. You start with what compiling means and write real programs with strings, vectors and algorithms. Then you go close to the machine: the stack and the heap, references and pointers, classes that clean up after themselves, smart pointers, and the undefined behaviour every C++ developer must learn to avoid. Every program in it was compiled with warnings on and run.

What you'll be able to do

  • Compile and run C++ programs with g++, and read its errors and warnings
  • Write programs with variables, functions, loops, strings and vectors
  • Sort, search and count with <algorithm> and lambdas
  • Explain the stack, the heap, references and pointers
  • Manage resources safely with classes, RAII and smart pointers
  • Recognise undefined behaviour and catch it with sanitizers
