APIs

REST, GraphQL, gRPC and WebSockets.

Every app you use is a conversation between programs. When you open your feed, a client asks a server for posts and gets JSON back, and the rules of that conversation are an API. This track starts from zero: HTTP requests and responses, status codes, JSON, curl and fetch, then designing clean REST resources. After that you learn what makes developers love an API: safe keys and tokens, pagination, errors that help, rate limits, versioning and webhooks, and when to reach for GraphQL, gRPC or WebSockets instead.

Every example is a real HTTP exchange you can read line by line.

What you'll be able to do

  • Read any HTTP request and response: method, path, headers, body and status
  • Call APIs from the terminal with curl and from JavaScript with fetch
  • Design clean REST resources and pick the right status codes
  • Keep keys safe, page through long lists and return errors that help
  • Change an API without breaking clients, and verify webhook signatures
  • Know when REST, GraphQL, gRPC or WebSockets fits best
