President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey’s role in NATO and its military presence in northern Syria are essential to keeping the region stable, as Ankara works to balance diplomacy with both Washington and Moscow.
The comments come amid continued tensions tied to Syria, where foreign powers remain deeply involved and the security situation remains fragile. Turkey has long argued that its forces in northern Syria are necessary for border security and countering threats, while critics question the long-term costs of the intervention.
Erdogan’s remarks also reflect Ankara’s effort to maintain leverage with two major powers at once. Turkey has repeatedly positioned itself as a bridge between competing sides in the wider conflict, using its NATO membership alongside direct talks with Russia and the United States.
For civilians in and around Syria, however, the diplomatic maneuvering offers limited relief. Years of war, displacement, and cross-border military action have left the region unstable, with ordinary people continuing to bear the consequences of decisions made by regional and global powers.
