Iran said on Sunday it would not enter fresh nuclear negotiations with the United States unless Washington first lifts sanctions, according to state media reports citing Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The remarks underscore how sanctions remain a central obstacle in any effort to restart diplomacy.
The position comes as relations between Tehran and Washington remain strained over Iran’s nuclear program and broader regional tensions. U.S. officials have long pressed for renewed talks, while Iran has insisted that pressure must ease before any meaningful engagement can move forward.
Sanctions have taken a heavy toll on ordinary Iranians, contributing to inflation, shortages, and a weakened economy. At the same time, Western governments continue to argue that limits on Iran’s nuclear activities are needed to reduce escalation risks.
For now, both sides appear far apart. Tehran is signaling that sanctions relief must come first, while Washington has not shown any sign it is prepared to meet that demand ahead of negotiations.
