Iran said it will continue enriching uranium to 60% purity, pushing back against renewed pressure from the United States and European governments to reduce its nuclear activity. The announcement keeps one of the region’s most sensitive security disputes in focus.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran intends to press ahead with its enrichment program, signaling that the government is not prepared to accept Western demands for rollback. The statement comes as diplomats remain divided over how to contain Iran’s nuclear advances and reduce the risk of further escalation.
The 60% enrichment level is far above the limit set under the 2015 nuclear deal and well above what is typically needed for civilian power generation. Western officials have long argued that such enrichment shortens the technical distance to weapons-grade material, while Iran maintains its program is intended for peaceful purposes.
The standoff adds pressure to already strained relations between Iran and the West, with sanctions, mistrust and failed negotiations continuing to weigh on ordinary Iranians. For many civilians, the unresolved nuclear dispute has meant more isolation, economic damage and fewer signs of relief.
