The U.S. Navy said it intercepted and destroyed a drone launched from Yemen that was aimed at a commercial vessel in the southern Red Sea on Saturday evening. The incident added to ongoing security risks in one of the world’s busiest shipping routes.
According to the Reuters report, the drone was fired by Houthi forces, who have repeatedly targeted commercial and military traffic in the region. U.S. officials said the vessel was not hit and no injuries were immediately reported.
The Red Sea has remained a flashpoint as attacks on shipping continue to threaten civilian crews, disrupt trade, and raise costs for global transport. Maritime security forces have stepped up patrols, but repeated strikes have shown how fragile the situation remains.
The latest interception comes amid broader regional tensions and renewed concern over the safety of commercial navigation. For shipping companies and crew members, even unsuccessful attacks can force route changes and increase the risk of escalation.
