European Parliament committees have voted to strengthen transparency and accountability rules for artificial intelligence systems under the Digital Services Act, in a move aimed at giving regulators and users more insight into how platforms operate. The proposal would require online services to explain more clearly how algorithmic tools shape content moderation decisions.
Supporters say the changes are needed to reduce opaque decision-making by large tech companies and to improve oversight of systems that increasingly influence what people see online. They argue that clearer disclosure rules could help identify bias, errors and the spread of harmful content.
The vote marks another step in the EU’s broader effort to tighten digital regulation and push major platforms toward greater responsibility. The proposal still faces the next stages of the legislative process before any rules can take effect.
If adopted, the measures would add new compliance obligations for companies operating in the European market, where lawmakers have already taken an aggressive approach to governing data, online safety and AI use.
