European lawmakers have moved a step closer to new rules that would make AI developers more accountable for harm caused by their systems. The European Parliament’s legal affairs committee backed proposals on Thursday that would create clearer liability standards for artificial intelligence tools and related services.

The draft measures also expand pressure on online platforms, adding stricter obligations around content moderation. Supporters say the changes are meant to close gaps in current law as AI products and automated systems take on a larger role in everyday decisions, from online services to workplace tools.

The proposal still faces further debate before it can become law. Even so, the committee vote signals that Brussels is continuing to push for a tougher regulatory framework for both AI developers and major digital platforms.

If adopted, the rules could reshape how companies design, monitor, and respond to harms linked to automated systems, while also raising the compliance burden for firms operating across the European market.
