250 years ago, on the eve of America’s fateful vote for independence, César Rodney received news that his immediate presence was necessary to break the stalemate between the delegates of the Second Continental Congress. Despite suffering from “asthma and facial cancer,” he immediately began a nighttime journey of 80 miles by horse from Dover in the state of Delaware to Philadelphia in the state of Pennsylvania. While he was in the path of a severe storm, 250 years ago, on this same day, July 2, 1776, he arrived to cast his decisive vote and secure the glorious fate of America’s freedom and independence. A statue honoring Rodney’s important role now stands in Freedom Plaza, in a new exhibit in Washington, D.C., dedicated to commemorating the heroes and martyrs of the American Revolution.
