🔶 Trump on Italy’s prime minister: A good person, but she made a mistake Donald Trump, the U.S. president, in new remarks about Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, called her a “good person,” but at the same time again criticized the Italian prime minister for refusing to cooperate with the United States during the course of the Iran war. Trump said on Tuesday, July 7, in a conversation with reporters in Ankara, ahead of the NATO summit of leaders, that his relationship with Meloni “became a bit worse, because she was not willing to help us on the Iran issue.” Meloni had previously been considered one of Trump’s closest allies, but the two leaders’ warm relations became strained last month after Trump’s interview with an Italian television network. In that interview, Trump said that during the Group of Seven leaders’ summit in France, Meloni “begged” to take a photo with him. Trump, speaking to reporters in Turkey, criticized Meloni’s lack of support for the United States and said: “She didn’t want to get involved in this affair, and that’s what made our relationship a bit dim. But I like her. I think she’s really a good person, but in my view she made a mistake.”
