OpenAI has unveiled o1, a new family of models designed to tackle complex reasoning tasks in mathematics, coding and science. The company says the system represents a significant step forward in AI’s ability to solve multi-step problems by thinking through them more effectively before responding.
According to OpenAI, o1 achieved strong results on several challenging benchmarks. The model scored 83% on AIME 2024, a test of advanced mathematical reasoning, and 74% on GPQA Diamond, a benchmark focused on graduate-level science questions. OpenAI also said the model performs well on coding tasks, highlighting its broader usefulness for technical work.
The company said o1 was trained using reinforcement learning methods that encourage the model to simulate chain-of-thought reasoning internally. That approach is intended to improve performance on tasks that require careful planning, logical deduction and step-by-step analysis.
Early access to o1 is now available through ChatGPT, with a wider rollout planned in the near future. OpenAI’s latest release comes as competition intensifies among AI developers seeking to build models that are not just fluent, but reliably capable of advanced reasoning across demanding real-world problems.
