George Russell set the pace in a chaotic opening practice session for the Monaco Grand Prix, narrowly beating McLaren’s Oscar Piastri by just 0.0006 seconds on a rain-affected street circuit. The Mercedes driver’s benchmark came in a session repeatedly interrupted by red flags, as the tight barriers and slippery surface caught out several frontrunners.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who is always under intense pressure at his home race, spun into the barriers early in the session, bringing out one of the stoppages. Red Bull’s Sergio Perez also ran into trouble, adding to the sense of uncertainty on a track where even the smallest mistake can end a driver’s day.
Monaco’s narrow, unforgiving layout once again proved its reputation as one of Formula 1’s most demanding venues, with limited grip and little room for error in the wet conditions. Drivers spent much of the session balancing caution with the need to find pace ahead of Saturday’s crucial qualifying session, where track position is especially vital.
With the field separated by tiny margins and the weather adding another layer of unpredictability, the opening practice offered an early reminder that Monaco can reshape the competitive order in an instant.
