OpenAI has introduced its new o1 model series, a major update designed to improve how artificial intelligence handles complex reasoning tasks. Unlike earlier systems that primarily focused on generating fluent responses, o1 is built to work through difficult problems in a more deliberate, step-by-step manner.

The company says the model performs especially well in areas such as advanced mathematics, coding, and scientific analysis. According to OpenAI, o1 significantly outperforms GPT-4o on challenging benchmarks, including AIME 2024, where it scored 83%, and GPQA Diamond, where it reached 74%. These results suggest a notable advance in AI’s ability to solve problems that require multi-stage logic and careful inference.

OpenAI attributes the improvement to a novel chain-of-thought training approach that encourages the model to simulate structured thinking before producing an answer. The method is intended to make the system more reliable on tasks where accuracy depends on reasoning rather than pattern recognition alone.

While the new model represents a substantial step forward, OpenAI also notes that it remains computationally intensive. That means the stronger reasoning performance comes with higher processing demands, which may affect speed and cost in some applications. Even so, the launch of o1 underscores the growing competition to build AI systems that can reason more like humans.
