UK Parliament Approves Emergency Energy Price Cap to Shield Households This Winter

The UK Parliament has passed emergency legislation to cap household energy bills at £1,717 a year for the next six months, in a move aimed at easing pressure on families facing a winter cost-of-living squeeze. The bill, backed by Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government, is designed to protect around 28 million households from a projected 10% rise in energy costs driven by higher global gas prices.

Labour MPs welcomed the measure as the delivery of a central election pledge, arguing that swift government action was needed to prevent further hardship as temperatures fall and heating demand increases. Ministers said the temporary cap would provide immediate relief while broader efforts continue to stabilize the energy market.

The legislation passed despite criticism from Conservative MPs, who questioned both the cost and the long-term effectiveness of the intervention. Opponents warned that price caps alone do not address the underlying volatility in international energy markets.

Still, the government framed the bill as an urgent response to an exceptional situation, with supporters saying it would give households greater certainty over winter bills. The cap is expected to remain in force for six months, after which ministers may review whether further support is needed.
