Researchers have reported a major step toward practical quantum computers after showing logical qubit error rates below a critical threshold for scalable fault tolerance. The result addresses one of the field’s biggest barriers: keeping fragile quantum information stable long enough to do useful work.

Quantum machines are expected to outperform conventional computers on some tasks, but only if they can correct errors at scale. Physical qubits are highly sensitive to noise, which has made reliable large systems difficult to build. By lowering logical error rates, the new work strengthens the case that useful, longer-running quantum devices may be technically feasible sooner than many experts had expected.

The advance is also likely to influence industry plans.
