The senior official said: “I certainly believe that the Strait of Hormuz and the protection of maritime transit in this route will be something that is raised.” He added that several NATO allies have announced their readiness to participate in efforts related to maritime security, but many of them “do not have the ships or necessary equipment to participate effectively in a meaningful naval operation.” The remarks come as, according to media reports, a draft statement of the NATO summit also emphasizes preventing Iran’s acquisition of nuclear weapons and the need to preserve freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
