Banfeh Zohrehai, a faculty member at the University of Tehran and head of the Water Institute at the university, warned that the volume of Iran’s renewable water resources has decreased significantly. At a meeting on water transfer, she said the country’s renewable water resources in the previous balance sheet were about 110 billion cubic meters, but in the new balance sheet they have reached 92 billion cubic meters—an approximately 17 billion cubic meter decline. Zohrehai also described deep water and sea water as among Iran’s unconventional water resources. The warning is being issued at a time when the water crisis and drought in recent years have involved a large part of Iran, increasing pressure on groundwater resources, agriculture, and the provision of water to cities.
