The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Moungi Bawendi, Louis Brus and Alexei Ekimov for their foundational work on quantum dots, nanoscale particles with major uses in imaging, lighting and electronics.
The announcement recognizes research that helped turn quantum dots from a laboratory curiosity into a technology with practical value across medicine, displays and other fields. The academy said the prize reflects both the discovery of the particles and the development of methods that made them useful.
Quantum dots are tiny semiconductor crystals whose properties change with size, allowing scientists to tune how they absorb and emit light. That unusual behavior has made them important in modern materials science and a range of commercial applications.
The award adds to a growing list of Nobel honors recognizing advances in nanotechnology and materials research. It also highlights how basic science can lead to tools that reshape everyday technology over time.
