Reuters, citing four knowledgeable sources, said that the damage caused to a Qatari ship carrying liquefied natural gas that was targeted in the Strait of Hormuz last night is being assessed as significant. These sources say that the ship’s engine room caught fire and the crew cannot assess the extent of further damage. However, the ship’s staff are safe. Bloomberg early Tuesday, 16 Tir, reported that the ship, owned by Qatar’s state shipping company, Nakilat, was hit with a projectile as it left the Strait of Hormuz and near the coasts of Oman, and caught fire. Meanwhile, the Islamic Republic of Iran’s state TV reported that the ship intended to pass through the Omanian route in the Strait of Hormuz “with support from the U.S. Navy,” but after “disregarding repeated warnings,” it was targeted. So far, officials of the Islamic Republic have not assumed responsibility for the attack. Qatar, along with Pakistan, is the main mediator in talks between the Islamic Republic and the United States, and part of the Islamic Republic’s blocked resources in that country are held there.
