One huge table, many small ones

Some tables only ever grow: scores, events, messages. After a few years every query, index and cleanup on them is slow. Partitioning splits one logical table into smaller physical ones, usually by time. Your queries still talk to one table, but PostgreSQL touches only the pieces it needs.
